This has been a really stressful adjustment for all of us. I have to follow him around all day, measure his food, monitor what he actually eats, figure up how much insulin to give him, give the insulin to him, watch to make sure he isn't showing signs of his sugar being too high or too low and then do my regular every day things on top of all that. It's not as easy as you might think. However, I am SO very grateful that I still have a son to take care of. I know it could have been much worse.
The point of this was to let you all know that Type 1 Diabetes is a very serious issue. It is something you NEED to watch for and no the signs of even if it doesn't run in your family.
Warning signs of T1D (these may occur suddenly):
- Extreme thirst
- Frequent urination
- Sudden vision changes
- Sugar in urine
- Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
- Increased appetite
- Sudden weight loss
- Drowsiness, lethargy
- Heavy, labored breathing
- Stupor, unconsciousness
